About this template
This bill splitter handles expenses shared by only some of the group. Add people and log what each person paid. For each expense, tap a name chip to exclude anyone who did not share it. The settlement recalculates on every keystroke.
Each expense's sharer settings feed the settlement calculation, which uses the fewest-transfer algorithm and updates on every keystroke. You get a single-screen layout with payer cards on the left and a live settlement panel on the right. The template eliminates spreadsheet formulas and manual arithmetic.
The template has one screen with a sticky top bar for the bill name and currency selector, a people-and-expenses column with inline editing and sharer chips, a settlement panel with animated stat tiles and a payments-required list, and a share row for copying a link, copying a text summary, downloading a PNG, or resetting to the example bill.
Shared spreadsheets require manual formulas for per-expense splitting. Apps like Splitwise require signup, while this bill splitter runs entirely in the browser and shares via a URL.
Best use cases
Post-trip settlement for travel groups
After a group trip, one person paid for the hotel, another covered dinners, and someone skipped the museum. This bill splitter lets you log each expense under the payer and exclude anyone who was not part of that particular cost. The fewest-transfer list tells each traveler exactly what to send and to whom. It replaces spreadsheet formulas with a few minutes of data entry.
Monthly rent and utility splits for housemates
When roommates share rent equally but split utilities based on usage, a flat average per person is wrong. Create separate rows for rent, electricity, internet, and groceries, then toggle off anyone who was away for part of the month. The settlement panel keeps a running total that updates as you add each cost, so disputes about who owes what disappear before they start.
Team dinner tabs with partial orders
A team dinner where three people ordered food but only two split the wine needs per-item control. Add the food total shared by everyone and the wine total shared by the two who drank. The tool recalculates each person's share on the spot, so you settle at the table instead of chasing payments the next day.
Event cost coordination for organizers
Planning a birthday party or weekend outing means tracking decorations, food, venue fees, and a gift the honoree should not pay for. Log each cost under the person who paid, tap the birthday person's chip to exclude them from the gift, and share the settlement link so every contributor sees their balance. That one link replaces a chain of "how much do I owe you?" messages.
Getting started
1. Remix the template
Click Remix to copy this template into your own Lovable workspace. You get the full single-screen bill splitter with payer cards, sharer chips, a settlement panel, and a share row. A pre-filled example bill with Alice, Ben, and Jill loads immediately so you can try the exclusion feature before changing anything.
2. Customize your brand
Open the top bar and replace the app name and icon to match your project or group identity. Adjust the primary tint color in the style configuration to align with your visual brand. The currency selector already supports nine options, so pick the one your group uses most.
3. Add your content
Clear the seed bill or click Reset and start fresh. Type a name for each person in your group and press Enter to create their payer card. Add expense rows inside each card, enter amounts in any format you prefer (30,4 and $20 both parse correctly), and tap sharer chips to exclude anyone from a particular cost. The settlement panel updates as you type.
4. Connect your tools
This template runs entirely in the browser with no backend. You can extend it by wiring up Supabase for persistent storage if you want multi-device access, or add Stripe if you want to collect payments directly. For most groups, the URL-encoded link and the text summary export cover everything you need.
5. Go live
Publish your bill splitter to a public URL using the Share button in Lovable. Send the link to your group. Each person opens it, sees the settlement, and knows exactly what to pay. You can keep editing your copy after sharing because each link is a snapshot of the bill at the moment you copied it.
Conclusion
This template is for anyone who splits costs with a group and needs per-expense control over who shares what. You walk away with a working bill splitter that handles partial shares and recalculates on every keystroke. It also settles the group in the fewest possible transfers. It works equally well for a three-person dinner tab or a 12-person vacation with dozens of mixed expenses.
Start by remixing the template and entering your group's real numbers. The seed bill demonstrates the exclusion feature and the settlement algorithm in under a minute, so you can verify the math before you add your own data. From there, publish a shareable link, export a text summary for your group chat, or download a settlement image. You can move from the first edit to a shared settlement link in well under an hour.
Features & capabilities
Per-expense sharer chips
Toggle any person on or off for each expense. The amber dot flags partial shares so nothing gets overlooked in the final settlement.
Keystroke-level recalculation
Balances, totals, and transfers update on every character you type. No Calculate button, no page reload, no waiting for results.
Fewest-transfer algorithm
The settlement minimizes payment count by matching the largest debtor to the largest creditor first, with rounding handled automatically.
URL-encoded bill sharing
The full bill encodes into the query string so a copied link restores every person, expense, and sharer setting in one click.
European number parsing
Type amounts as 30,4 or 1.234,56 and the parser reads the last comma or dot as the decimal separator. No manual format toggle needed.
Person removal with undo
Remove a payer and all their expenses in one action. A toast with an Undo button restores everything, including sharer memberships.
Settlement image export
Download the settlement panel as a PNG using the browser's Canvas API. Share the result in any group chat without needing a link.
Nine currency symbols
Switch between USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, CAD, INR, SGD, and AED. All amounts re-display instantly with the chosen symbol.
Interactive seed bill
A pre-filled roadtrip example with a partial-share expense loads on first visit so you see the tool working before you type anything.
